Salinas FFA Lends a
Helping Hand
Submitted by Karina Medrano
The Ag incentive grant is an important grant that all FFA
chapters in California receive every year to maintain their
chapter. At the last California Agricultural Teachers’ Association
(CATA) meeting our Southern Region FFA advisor, Jack Havens,
informed all the Ag teachers that the state of California is
planning to cut the Ag Incentive Grant beginning January
2014. Without the Ag Incentive Grant many FFA chapters
throughout the State of California won’t be able to maintain
their school farm, provide supplies to their students, or support
animal and shop project for the fair. To advocate against these
budget cuts, Holtville FFA asked their members to make their
voices heard. At their November FFA meeting, the officer team
asked their members to either write letters to local legislators or
stay after the meeting and make a video about why they are
thankful for FFA. These letters and the video will be submitted to
local and state-wide legislators.
The warm sun on our backs, sweat on
our shirts, and a day full of new blisters
paired with skills and knowledge about the
agriculture industry. This is what the Salinas
FFA chapter gained from a student organized
Second Harvest Field Gleaning Food Drive.
Salinas FFA members gathered at the local
Salinas FFA Farm and headed out early on
a Saturday morning with the help of the
Coastline Produce company to a local field to
do a community field gleaning. The Salinas
FFA chapter gained not only the experience
of a field-work day, but we also left with true
hard earned knowledge about a big part of
the agriculture industry. Our members learned
that while agriculture work is hard the ultimate
reward is seeing the benefit that you can
provide to your community by working as a
team and traveling outside your comfort zone.
