You will need:
• 5B or 6B charcoal pencil
• Inspiration photos of your choice
• Ruler
• Toothpicks or sterilised needles
• Transfer paper or baking paper
I used Ukrainian traditional clothes and pysanka (traditional painted eggs) as inspiration for
this cake.
Step 1:
Measure the height of the tier. Draw
two straight lines as bottom of tier
and top. The area between the
lines will be the decoration area.
Step 3:
Cut out the decorated design and
attach it to the side of the cake, the
drawn side touching the fondant,
using toothpicks or needles for
support.
Step 2:
Start drawing the design on a baking paper . If you find it difficult to draw
free hand you can trace from a picture.
Step 4:
With your pencil go through the
drawn lines. This should leave
traced drawing of the design on
fondant
Step 5:
Today’s pencils are non-toxic but
if you still don’t want the charcoal
to touch your fondant, attach the
drawing sheet with the drawn side
facing outwards. With a scriber
needle scrape on the drawn areas
and it will leave scratch marks on
the fondant. Those will be your
guide for the piping.
