Get many pictures you can of the object your going to sculpt. For example, for our roast chicken cake I got lots of pictures of the subject matter and I chose which one I wanted to replicate (colour wise) and then chose the best method to achieve that result, that particular cake was hand painted. If you wanted to create a sculpted cake such as a car, how would you go about it? For most vehicles and cars you can get blue prints off the internet and scale it down accordingly.
