Certified by federal and municipal governments, Sanders and his staff track the movement of mother turtles by satellite, noting when they come ashore to lay their eggs. The team then combs the beach, moving eggs into a protected corral so they’re safe from predators and human interference. When the eggs hatch some 45 days later, the team staggers the release of baby turtles along the beach and invites hotel guests to witness this remarkable sight. Other turtle species, including green, loggerhead, leather- back and hawksbill, also nest on the peninsula. I ’m about to dIve Into some fresh fish tacos and a margarita by the pool when I notice a crowd of guests gathering. I soon see what the buzz is all about: Out of the corner of my eye, I spot a jet of water rise from the water—a whale! The spray is quickly followed by another and another.
