A look at 100 years of
CAA Saskatchewan
By Dale JOhnsOn
a century ago, a group of 40
car buffs from across Saskatchewan gathered in downtown
Regina in hopes of establishing a provincial motor club. As
they arrived at the Board of Trade office at Scarth Street
and 11th Avenue, the men yearned for a better deal for car
owners in Saskatchewan.
Car clubs had been springing up across the province for
several years, allowing automobile owners to swap stories,
driving techniques and tips. The idea of a Saskatchewan
motor club had first come up in 1914, but plans were put on
hold due to the outbreak of the First World War.
On Thursday, April 19, 1917, however, the group was ready
to join together to present a united voice in the push for
better roads. And those “roads” needed a lot of work: They
were largely mud and gravel trails; getting stuck in wet
weather was commonplace. »
