By the Way
Sure, SaSkatchewan iS a landlocked province,
but there’s a lot of water between its rectangular
borders. And in the southern prairieland, rivers
can be tricky to cross. The first commercial
ferry set sail at Batoche in 1871—well before
Saskatchewan was even established as a
province. Today, there are 13 active seasonal
ferries servicing residents and visitors. East of
Prince Albert, between Highways 55 and 302,

the Cecil Ferry crosses the North Saskatchewan
River. Built in 1969, it’s one of the busiest
crossings in the province, transporting nearly
20,000 vehicles every year. Although it can hold
just six vehicles at a time, the boat’s load limit
is nearly 32 tonnes—making the free ferry ideal
for combines, tractors, high-clearance sprayers
and even herds of cattle. Exactly what one would
