FESTIVALS SPORTS
Vitajemo to Veselka
Once hailed as the “Best
Place in the World to Live”
by CBC Provincial Radio,
the small town of Foam
Lake is also home to Veselka,
the largest rural Ukrainian
festival in Western Canada.
Located in the province’s
perogy belt, the cabaret-style
event celebrates Ukrainian
culture and heritage. The
evening starts with a tradi-
tional buffet-style supper of
perogies, kielbasa and
cabbage rolls. Each year a
different Ukrainian folk-
dance ensemble travels from
across Canada to perform
alongside local talent like
the Veselka Choir, Wishart
Hopak Dancers and the
Zuchkan Band. (Advance
tickets only.) Winter’s Best
Nearly 1,800 top young
athletes will head to The
Battlefords to compete in
17 sports during the 2018
Saskatchewan Winter
Games. Occurring every four
years like the Olympics, it’s
the largest multi-sport event
in the province. From alpine
skiing and snowboarding
to table tennis and weight-
lifting, the event is an
important showcase for the
province’s best athletes.

to the winners, but there’s
one catch: Racers must be
riding a single cylinder
antique sled from 1974 or
earlier. Young competitors
can also throttle up and
compete in the Kitty Cat and
Youth snowmobile races.
Enthusiasts of vintage sleds
can stay warm while watch-
ing the race from the heated
beer garden. A pancake
breakfast in the morning
kicks off the competition.
