On Dec. 12, 1985 an Arrow
Air flight of American
peacekeepers, on their
way home from a mission
in Egypt, crashed near
Gander. All 256 souls
onboard the plane perished.
On the site, the Silent
Witnesses Memorial
stands to commemorate
the crash—the worst ever
on Canadian soil. The
striking statue features a
U.S. soldier flanked by two
children, each holding an
olive branch to memorialize
the peacekeeping mission
of those lost.

The Rooms Provincial
Art Gallery and Museum
Appropriately, this gallery
overlooking the St. John’s
harbour resembles a
collection of colourful
East Coast houses. Inside,
however, the quaint exterior
gives way to four floors of
classic and contemporary
works of art. The museum
tells the fabled story of the
province and its inhabitants
through painting, folk art,
sculpture, paper ephemera
and artifacts. After a lap
around the 3,000-square-
metre space, head to The
Rooms Café. Tuck into local
specialties like cod tongues
or seafood chowder while
soaking up stunning views.
Why drink water when
you can drink iceberg
water? And why drink
regular wine when you
can drink vino made with
iceberg water! Located
in Twillingate, the self-
proclaimed “Iceberg
Capital of the World,” this
island vineyard produces
some of Canada’s tastiest
wines using melted bergs
and local wild fruits.
Sample a glass of the
winery’s top tart libations,
inc luding cloudberry and
lingonberry wines. While
you’re there, stop by the
ice cream shop to try a
frozen wine-flavoured
scoop.
