Take an Expedition:
The Lewis & Clark Trail
The Lewis and Clark Expedition travelled this
area in 1804 and again in 1806. The confluence of
Missouri and Yellowstone rivers is home to Fort
Union Trading Post, a national historic site, and
an important stop for the Native American tribes,
traders and trappers. Fort Union, Fort Buford, and
the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Center are an
easy 50 mile drive west of Watford City.
Celebrate Native Nations:
Three Affiliated Tribes Earthlodge Village
Just 45 miles east of Watford City, experience Native
American culture, an earthlodge village and explore
museums featuring authentic artwork, crafts and
artifacts of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.
Get outside:
Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP)
TRNP’s North Unit is located 15 miles south
of Watford City and features an abundance of
watchable wildlife species like bison, elk, prairie
dogs, white tail deer, and golden eagles to name
a few. Put some miles on your hiking boots, bring
your mountain bike, or take a scenic drive through
this preserved section of the Badlands.
