Precious cargo
With a baby on the way, these CAA members made the
most of the company’s new car seat clinics
by CARLy peteRs
Despite the best intentions of loving
moms and dads, Transport Canada
estimates that up to 80 percent of car
seats are installed incorrectly. With a
baby on the way, that’s a stat Elyse and
Ryan Wood wanted to steer clear of.
To make sure they selected and
installed the right seat for their bundle
of joy, the Woods attended a CAA car
seat information session, which they’d
spotted in a CAA member email. The
sessions cover a wide range of topics,
from the most common mistakes
parents make to proper buckling
techniques.
“We discovered that there’s a lot more
to car seats than meets the eye—for
instance, some seats can be a better
match for certain cars,” Elyse says. The
new mom notes that they also learned
about the various other car and booster
seats for kids as they grow.
Armed with this new information,
the couple bought a car seat and
retuned to CAA for an inspection
clinic where CAA’s certified child
passenger safety technicians walked
them through proper installation and
adjusted the car seat accordingly.
Both parents got a chance to tighten
straps and adjust the chest clip. They
also learned about padding to support
their little one’s head. “The staff was so
helpful, accommodating and patient
with us,” Ryan adds.
And the timing could not have
been more perfect: Two days after the
clinic, Elyse gave birth to a healthy
baby boy.
On their ride home from the
hospital—arguably the most stressful
drive for all cautious new parents—the
couple felt confident that their precious
cargo was safe and secure.
