RegaRding youR aRticle
about the virtues of car
illumination (“phantom
Vehicles”, fall 2018),
sweden—not canada—was
the first country to require
daytime running lights
(Drl) in 1977. in 1989 they
were mandated in new cars
here to reduce daytime
collision by improving
visibility. Unfortunately,
a significant percentage
of cars built since then
have dysfunctional Drl.
consequently, they are
“masked” on the highway
by other cars with working
Drl. it is clear to me from
the widespread presence of
these cars that their drivers
are cavalier, and that police
forces do not care (Drl
are included in manitoba’s
Highway Traffic Act).

Closed for Winter
it is wondeRful to
see Riding Mountain
National Park
(“Neighbourhood
Watch,” winter
2018) promoted in
your magazine. But
during winter, many
businesses in the
townsite close for the
season. Elkhorn and
Arrowhead resorts
are open year-round,
but Poor Michael’s is
closed. Though one
can still see the bison
in the winter.

Editor’s note: Thanks
for the update, Shirley.
We regret directing
readers to businesses
shuttered during
winter, but we hope
Manitobans will check
them out when they
reopen this spring!

the Downtown area once, but after
reading this article i realize i missed
a lot! i’ll be going to Vegas to watch
the contintental cup of curling, which
is another new and popular activity
there. another cool outing would be to
catch a game between our Winnipeg
Jets and the Vegas Golden knights.
