Iron Age. With our thirst for Scottish
culture quenched, it’s time for some
city life. We camp on the outskirts
of the Scottish capital and take the
tram downtown, where winding,
cobblestone streets would test even the
best of drivers. In the city, the kids love
the zoo, while my wife and I enjoy a

stroll through Edinburgh’s Old Town.
I persuade the family to take one last
hike: a manageable climb up Arthur’s
Seat, an extinct volcano with glorious
views of the city.
Finally, it’s time to point the car
back toward Glasgow. On our way,
we spend a day exploring Dumfries
and Galloway, my ancestral home.
We visit the church where my great-
grandparents married before setting
off to Canada on their “honeymoon”—
never to return to Scotland.
We linger as long as we can, but the
car is due back in Glasgow soon. After
dropping it off at the car hire, we savour
one last meal. Despite a few hiccups,
our road trip has been full of family
memories—new and old—and there’s
no way I’d rather see Scotland.
