EvEry fall, thE skiEs ovEr Manitoba
fill with
flocks of migrating geese. FortWhyte Alive’s
Goose Flights (Sept. 20–Oct. 22) showcase
the birds as they come in to hunker down for
the night on the centre’s lake. Throughout the
year, more than 160 species of birds drop by
FortWhyte to roost in its marsh, forest and
grassland. But things really come alive in the fall.
At sunset, the pink and orange sky is streaked
with the flapping wings of thousands of fowl.

The painterly scene is an amateur photogra-
pher’s dream, while the honks of thousands of
birds create an uncanny chorus. The nightly
ritual continues for about a month as the geese
head to warmer climates south of the border. To
take in the show, arrive 30 minutes before sunset
and stick around until the birds are bedded: You
can cook bannock over an open fire or reserve a

Stone Café. —Kellie Davenport
