FortWhyte Alive’s Goose Flights (Sept. 20–Oct. 22) showcase the birds as they come in to hunker down for the night on the centre’s lake. Throughout the year, more than 160 species of birds drop by FortWhyte to roost in its marsh, forest and grassland. But things really come alive in the fall. At sunset, the pink and orange sky is streaked with the flapping wings of thousands of fowl. 70 Fall 2017 CAA MaNITOBa The painterly scene is an amateur photogra- pher’s dream, while the honks of thousands of birds create an uncanny chorus. The nightly ritual continues for about a month as the geese head to warmer climates south of the border. To take in the show, arrive 30 minutes before sunset and stick around until the birds are bedded: You can cook bannock over an open fire or reserve a Goose Flight Feast served at FortWhyte’s Buffalo Stone Café. —Kellie Davenport What’s Good for the Goose
