Nestled in a thick grove of cedar trees, the gallery appears to rise naturally from the landscape. vancouver philan- thropists michael audain and Yoshiko karasawa established the gallery to house their collection of coastal B.C. art, including a permanent collection of nearly 200 works. featured artists range from landscape legend emily Carr to post-war modernists e.J. hughes and Gordon smith to modern masters like Jeff Wall and Dana Claxton. You’ll also find a tem- porary space that hosts travelling exhibitions throughout the year. During my visit, i’m lucky enough to see one such display, from Geisha to Diva: the kimono of ichimaru. it is simply breathtaking. in the peaceful silence of the museum, i take time to revel in the intricate designs of these glamorous garments. the gallery is currently hosting edward Burtynsky: the scarred earth, a fascinating and thought- provoking look at how human industry is trans- forming the planet (to oct. 16).
