Out Of the wOOds
after paying homage to
the culture of the squamish
and lil’wat Nations,
immerse yourself in more
contemporary art at the
Audain Art Museum. the
building’s architecture is
a work of art unto itself:
its asymmetrical points
and edges are evocative
of rocky outcroppings.
Nestled in a thick grove
of cedar trees, the gallery
appears to rise naturally
from the landscape.
vancouver philan-
thropists michael audain
and Yoshiko karasawa
established the gallery to
house their collection of
coastal B.C. art, including
a permanent collection
of nearly 200 works.
featured artists range
from landscape legend
emily Carr to post-war
modernists e.J. hughes and
Gordon smith to modern
masters like Jeff Wall
and Dana Claxton.
You’ll also find a tem-
porary space that hosts
travelling exhibitions
throughout the year. During
my visit, i’m lucky enough
to see one such display,
from Geisha to Diva: the
kimono of ichimaru. it is
simply breathtaking. in
the peaceful silence of the
museum, i take time to revel
in the intricate designs of
these glamorous garments.
the gallery is currently
hosting edward Burtynsky:
the scarred earth, a
fascinating and thought-
provoking look at how
human industry is trans-
forming the planet (to
oct. 16).
