Auto insurance for passenger vehicles is mandatory in Manitoba through Manitoba Public Insurance ( MPI ). Basic coverage protects you if you ’ re in a collision , but you can also buy additional coverage for situations that could prove costly . all perils Basic Autopac covers collision and comprehensive repairs to your vehicle .
collision Covers the costs of repairing your vehicle after a collision .
comprehensive Covers damage to your vehicle after most things not covered by collision , such as fire , hail , theft or vandalism .
Deductible Uninsured portion of your policy . Options include $ 100 , $ 200 , $ 300 and $ 500 ( basic ).
auto loss of use An extension product available that covers the costs of a rental vehicle while your car is being repaired or the claim is being processed .
Glass Covers the cost of repairing a chip or complete windshield replacement . With a lower deductible ( less than $ 500 ), it does not apply on chip . repairs . Deductible will apply on glass replacement .
new vehicle protection An extension product available that covers the price you paid for a new vehicle , including a percentage for inflation if it is written off within two years of purchasing the coverage . ( Does not include coverage for outstanding debt , warranties or insurance .)
Third-party liability ( TPL ) Protects you if you ’ re found responsible for causing a collision or property damage as you could potentially be sued by the affected parties . ( If the court settlement exceeds your coverage amount , you are legally obligated to pay the remainder .) Basic Autopac includes $ 200,000 in coverage . The maximum coverage available is $ 10 million .

LIcence PLaTe It stays with you , not the vehicle . When trading in a vehicle , swap the plate . But if you ’ re buying for the first time , or buying an additional vehicle , you need a new plate . It must be linked to a vehicle when first purchasing , so you ’ ll need to provide the Vehicle Identification Number of your new car . reGIsTraTIon Every vehicle must be provincially registered with MPI each year to legally use the road . In Manitoba , registration is included with government insurance and plate stickers are no longer required .
