Lois Werts
Resident of the Month
Lois Werts was born to Ruth
(Butler) and Paul Armstrong April 4,
1930, near the square in Bolivar, Mo.
Lois was the first of five children. Her
brother, Jay Armstrong lives in Spring-
field and sister, Neita Campbell lives in
Bolivar. Her siblings, Paul Armstrong
and Joy Wilkinson are both now de-
ceased.
Lois attended Bolivar schools, grad-
uating in 1948. Unable to go to college,
she went to work for T.H. and Elvin
Douglas, founders of the Douglas Law
Firm. “They were kind enough to allow
on the job training,” she said. Her work
experience also included working with
attorney Richard Collins, Bolivar, and
the county attorney in Hutchinson, Kan-
sas. Lois also worked as secretary for
the Polk County library.
In 1952, Lois married Loren Werts, a
native of Western Nebraska. Loren was
in the postal service. He was active in
different organizations as well as serving
in a state office in the National Associa-
tion of Postmasters. Loren passed away
in 1987. The couple were blessed with
35 years of marriage and two wonderful
children.
Lois worked four different times for
the library taking time away to care for
her children and family. The last 15
years she managed the Humansville
Branch of Polk County Library. She
retired in 1995.
Lois is a member of the United
Methodist Church serving as treasurer,
choir, altar society, finance committee,
and wherever she was needed. She
was active in the General Federa-
tion of Women Club, Concerned
Women for America, Rural Letter
Carriers Auxiliary, National Associ-
ation of Postmasters Auxiliary, and
various other organizations for many
years.
Lois enjoys spending time with
her children, Jane Hoffman of
Ozark, and Stanley Werts of
Humansville. She is blessed with
five grandchildren and seven great-
grandchildren.
Lois moved to Butterfield in
October 2016. She enjoys staying
active with exercises, watercolor art
class, crafts, Golden Age Games,
socials, parties music and visiting
with her many friends. We are so
blessed you are a part of our BRCC
