William Cooper,
Resident of the Month
Dr. William ( Bill) Cooper’s extraordinary life
began March 20, 1942. It was such a cold morn-
ing in Washington D.C., that when Robert
Cooper, M.D., brought his wife, Carrie, roses in
the hospital to commemorate their second child’s
birth, they had frozen in the short distance from
the car into the building. Bill’s birth also brought
the congratulations of Franklin and Eleanor Roo-
sevelt, who his mother was requested to sing for
when the President vacationed at the “Little
White House” in Georgia, where Bill’s mother’s
family was from. During his childhood, annual
road trips between Washington D.C. and Geor-
gia, always during the month of August, were
highlighted with stopping for cold Coca-Cola
along the way and returning up North with anoth-
er years supply of family–made jam and jelly.
Bill attended school in Washington D.C. with
his brother Bobby and sister Carrie. Bill’s pro-
pensity for learning and artistic gifting became
apparent at an early age. In the 5th grade, he
wrote the music for what became the school’s
anthem and still is today. As a high school junior,
the administration thought it impossible for
someone to get a perfect score on the SAT, so
they made him take it again under privately proc-
tored conditions. As far as they know, he is the
only one from that school to get a perfect score
twice. He enjoyed singing in the glee club and
especially enjoyed chess-tournaments between he
and his brother and father, often lasting days at a
time. Visiting the Washington D.C. Zoo was a
past time that, over the years, resulted in a friend-
ship with a particular elephant that would pick
Bill out of a crowd.
Bill graduated from George Washington Uni-
versity with a degree in Biology/Pre Medicine.
After committing his life to the Lord, Bill began
attending medical school in Guadalajara, Mexi-
co, and later transferred to the American Univer-
sity Medical School, one of the leading medical
schools in the country at the time. He completed
residency training in Georgia in the field of Ob-
stetrics/Gynecology (OBGYN), followed by a
fellowship for specialized training in Maryland.
He received additional training at Kings
College in Cambridge University, England,
in the new field of “In Vitro Fertilization
(IVF) and infertility.
He developed and practiced IVF in
Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. Bill had sev-
eral patented medical inventions used in
ground-breaking embryology treatments
that resulted in thousands of children being
born that would not be otherwise. Bill al-
ways attributed his high success rate in the
field of infertility to his faith in the Lord.
Bill married a traveling evangelist
named Carol Cerulli. After retiring from
medicine in 2000, he and Carol found the
greatest joy ministering together. The cou-
ple traveled full time, teaching and preach-
ing in churches, schools, and conferences in
over 40 nations until 2016. He is a pub-
lished author, has six children and six
grandchildren. His son in law, Kurt Brava-
ta, M.D. works at Citizens Memorial Hos-
pital. Bill moved to BRCC in 2017. We are
blessed to have him in our Butterfield
family.
