Charles “Charlie” Mashburn was born in
an old farmhouse on the family’s farm
between Goodson and Louisburg, Missouri
July 26, 1939. His parents, Jesse and Betty
Crowell Mashburn, bought old farms, fixed
them up and then sold them. Charlie remembers
the family moving from one farm to another
and instead of hauling the livestock,
drove it for several miles to the new farm.
Charlie had one younger sister and two
younger brothers.
Because the family moved several times,
Charlie attended several schools. He went to
Bolivar and then Mt. Etna. When Charlie was
11 years old, the family moved to Sunflower,
Kansas, and Charlie attended school there
until the eighth grade. The family then moved
to Lawrence, Kansas, where Charlie attended
high school with famous NFL quarterback
Johnny Hadl. Because his mom worked for
the University of Kansas, Charlie gained a
special privilege of using the university’s
gym. That’s when he met and played basketball
with the famous Wilt Chamberlin. The
family moved back to Bolivar during Charlie’s
junior year and he graduated from Bolivar
High School in 1958. While in high
school, he loved playing baseball and running
track.
The day after he graduated from high
school, Charlie moved back to Lawrence and
worked on a farm and a Kroger grocery store.
He had a tractor accident and came back to
Bolivar. In 1959, Charlie married Phyllis
Carsen. The couple moved to Kansas City
and both worked for General Motors. Eventually
they returned to their home town of Bolivar
and then once again moved back to Lawrence
area and resided in Eudora, Kansas
They were blessed with five beautiful children,
Brad, Kent, Jamie, Kelly and Casey.
There were only 13 and a half months between
each one! Charlie worked for a tree
surgeon during that time. He continued to
work in that industry for at least part-time for
over 40 years.
When their oldest son, Brad, was a
freshmen in high school, Charlie and
Phyllis moved the family back to
Bolivar. Charlie worked for Jones Truck
Line for 18 years and then worked for
Associated Grocers for nine years. Brad
was awarded the Most Outstanding Student
& Athlete from Bolivar High
School. He later attended SBU and as a
missionary has been all over the world.
He is currently in the African country of
Senegal. Charlie’s daughter, Jamie, lives
in Springfield, Missouri, with her husband,
Brent, and is a special education
teacher. Charlie has seven grandchildren
and three great grandchildren.
Charlie has enjoyed horse, mules and
trail riding throughout his life. He is
somewhat famous for riding “off the
trail.” He would often ride one of his
mules into town with his dog riding behind
his back! A person could frequently
find his mule “parked” off the square in
the sheriff’s designated parking space.
Charlie has also been a sports enthusiast
through his life. He is a Liberator fan
and has attend many high school basketball,
football and other games and
events.
In 2019, Charlie moved to
Butterfield. He has continued to enjoy
attending Liberator ball games and
sporting events and has continued to
travel long distances to be sure not to
miss out on the excitement. Thank you
for sharing your story with us Charlie.
