Asghar Ali The winning design Bradford students celebrate ‘The Magic of Christmas’ in eCard design competition E3 Bradford, for the second year running, invited primary schools from across the district to ‘Design our Christmas Card’, a competition that sees the winning image placed on an electronic Christmas card and sent to all of E3 Bradford’s business and education contacts. The competition received the support of Bradford-based businesses; Kirkgate Shopping Centre, Watson Buckle, Naylor Wintersgill and BASF. Kirkgate Shopping Centre, the main sponsors, set the theme of the competition by asking students to depict in their designs ‘The magic of Christmas’ whilst also incorporating the cube from the E3 Bradford logo. Over 180 pictures were received, displaying a colourful array of designs using different materials. Entries were narrowed down to potential winners with the help of Catherine Riley, Kirkgate Shopping Centre Manager and Paul Mackie, chair of E3 Bradford. The design produced by a student from Horton Park Primary School won because of its great attention to detail, design flair and meeting of the design brief. They were awarded a framed certificate, vouchers and a trophy in a school assembly. Participating schools were: Barkerend Primary School, Clayton C of E Primary School, Heaton Primary School, Horton Grange Primary School, Horton Park Primary School, Lower Fields Primary School, Parkland Primary School, St Columba’s Catholic Primary School, St Josephs’ Roman Catholic Primary School and St Oswald’s C of E Primary Academy. Are you the next young entrepreneur in Bradford? A new film encouraging local young people to consider becoming entrepreneurs has been made. The film, ‘Bradford Born, Bred and in Business’, includes interviews with eight local people, discussing how they became entrepreneurs and promoting the idea to others. Event inspires students about careers in STEM One of the entrepreneurs featured in the video is Asghar Ali, CEO of the award-winning cafe bar chain, MyLahore. Asghar commented: “A successful business story told well to young minds can be the catalyst and inspiration to great businesses of the future. Great businesses of the future are the lifeblood and heartbeat of the economy.” Skills for STEM - a 2-day event to inspire young people about taking up a career in the science, technology, engineering and maths based industries - took place at Kala Sangam in Bradford in December. The event welcomed over 100 14-16 year olds through the door over the two days, each of them able to have a go at practical activities to help them understand the skills and techniques used in business, and the potential opportunities each industry sector can offer. The film can be watched on YouTube at the following address: http://chmbr.co/bbbb There is also an accompanying Facebook page called ‘Bradford Talent’ to find advice and information on how to start a business. Workshops were delivered by four different organisations. Incommunities introduced students to basic electrical, plumbing and joinery skills; Leeds College of Building used simple materials to produce a small electromagnet; City Training Services tasked students with testing their own lung function and checking their peak flow readings; University of Bradford worked with students to explore the useful molecules we get from bees by making lip balm, and also demonstrated how valuable programming skills are in the world of work by setting a challenge to build and program a robotic vehicle. Askham Bryan College, who exhibited at the event, spoke to students about careers in animal management and gave a demonstration on animal resuscitation. Careers advisers from Prospects were also on hand to talk to the young people about the training and career opportunities available.
