Instead of the 66-mile route that goes around Corpus Christi Bay, riders choos- ing that route will now have the option of doing multiple loops of the 21-mile ride that takes cyclists down scenic Shoreline and Ocean Drive from downtown to Na- val Air Station Corpus Christi and back. Although we are very proud of what we have been able to create over the last 14 years, we also know the most import- ant thing right now is to help communi- ties and individuals rebuild. This modi- fied route utilizing the fewest municipal resources allows us to keep the event going without putting too much pressure Our main goal with the ride this year is to on our community and governmental support our neighbors along the coast- partners. al bend. In talking with many civic and community leaders, they all expressed a desire to keep the event going in some form or fashion. That being said, with the amount of damage and destruction, resources were going to be cut thin and we needed to work with several or- ganizations to pull off any ride- be it a new route or the existing route(s). City planners, traffic engineers, local police, county sheriff, TxDot, neighborhood as- sociations, barricade companies and the sanctioning body that provides the insur- ance all have a say in how and where a rid e can take place. TCP’s (Traffic Control Plans) are drawn up several months in advance for all of these entities to comment on and/or ap- prove. To create a new one, especially when resources are stretched thin be- cause of the relief effort, was just not possible.
