The project includes deepening the 36-mile channel from the Gulf of Mexico to the Viola Turning Basin to a minimum depth of 54 ’ allowing safe passage of the world ’ s most modern fleet of ships , widening as much as 530 ’ in some areas , adding barge shelves across the Corpus Christi Bay - allowing for much safer two-way vessel traffic , construction of a rock breakwater at Pelican Island to protect rookery and nesting habitat , and creating 700 acres of beneficial use sites and shallow water habitats . We are expected to break ground on the channel improvement project early next year .

This success has primarily occurred because of leadership . For the past 23 years that person has been our executive director , John LaRue . Several months ago john advised the members of the commission of his intent to retire at the end of 2018 after over 30 years in the business . The commission is working on a succession plan and will during this upcoming year tap the extensive knowledge that john has of the port business as we prepare for his retirement . We look forward to another successful year and a smooth transition into new leadership in 2019 , welcoming Sean Strawbridge as the new CEO of Port Corpus Christi .
