5 7 6 BEST IN THE BIZ AWARD NOMINATIONS CLOSE // 4 4 WINDSTORM WIN FOR THE TEXAS COAST // October 11, 2018 was a monumental day for the Coastal Bend and the continuous fight for windstorm insurance reform as news broke that Governor Abbott pushed back the deadline for the Texas Department of Insurance's decision on a 10% rate increase proposed by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. This move provides us a chance to make our case to the Texas Legislature and seek relief from TWIA rate hikes. Thank you to all who signed the petition opposing a rate increase on TWIA policyholders, sent letters to TDI Commissioner Kent Sullivan and took time out of their day to attend rallies. Last but certainly not least, thank you to our incredible delegation for working diligently on our behalf in Austin: Representative Todd Hunter, Representative Abel Herrero and Senator Chuy Hinojosa! 5 SCHOLARSHIPS PRESENTED TO LOCAL MILITARY // Established in 2016, the Chamber's Military Legacy Scholarship is awarded annually to an active duty military personnel member, their spouse, or dependent from the Coastal Bend region. At the annual Salute to the Military event on July 30, the United Corpus Christi Chamber was proud to present not one but three scholarships to deserving recipients in our community! Thank you to the Military Legacy Scholarship Founding Sponsor: Whataburger; and Sustaining Partners: IBC Bank and Olivarri & Associates for generously supporting this initiative and making this monumental gift possible! Thank you to everyone who submitted award nominations for the new and improved "Best in the Biz" Awards. We received over 100 nominations and look forward to announcing the top three finalists for each award category within the next few weeks. Once the finalists are announced, Chamber members will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred winner in each award category. In the meantime, mark your calendar for the 2018 "Best in the Biz" Awards event on December 6 at the Ortiz Center; click here for ticket and sponsorship information. 7 UPDATES FROM THE UCCCC OFFICE // We are excited to announce that two Chamber team members have stepped into new roles at the office! Join us in congratulating Silvia Martinez- Pacheco, who has been named the Finance Resource Officer; and Gloria Angelia Fuentes, who has moved into the role of Executive Assistant. We are confident that these changes will yield positive results as we continue to grow and find new ways to serve our members!
