DESTINATION : EDUCATION ! AT LA PALMERA MALL

Coastal Compass Education and Career Resource Center and La Palmera Mall have teamed up to present Destination : Education ! - an education fair to help students , parents and community members prepare for the upcoming 2017-18 school year . On Friday , August 4 , from 10:00 a . m . to 5:00 p . m . over 30 advisors from colleges , universities , skills training centers , schools , after school programs , and community organizations will be located throughout the mall to provide information on a variety of topics . The event is free and open to the public .

Additionally , staff at Coastal Compass will assist students in preparing for postsecondary education by completing college applications , the FAFSA ( Free Application for Federal Student Aid ), and scholarship applications . The Coastal Compass is a comprehensive , one-stop resource center that offers clients free information and assistance with all types of educational and career development programs .

YOU Learn ! Educator Externship Program

Local educators participated in a oneweek ( July 10th – 14th ) YOU ( Youth Opportunities Unlimited ) Learn ! Educator Externship Program that immersed them in Coastal Bend careers . Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend ’ s YOU Initiative has provided grant funding to Citizens for Educational Excellence to create partnerships among workforce , industry and educators to develop an effective workforce system by allowing this select group to make the connection between academic skills and the workplace .

Elementary , middle and high school teachers and counselors engaged in activities through the externship in which they learned about skill sets in various career fields and learn how classroom content applied to the real world . In addition to experiencing the daily rigors of occupations in health care , law enforcement and the petrochemical industry , participants toured the Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend , Coastal Compass Education and Career
Resource Center , Port Industries of Corpus Christi . At the conclusion of the program , educators used what they learned to develop lesson plans for the coming academic year that will inform , educate , and allow students to experience a myriad of careers .
Employers that participated in the program included the following : City of Corpus Christi , Port Industries , Nueces County Sheriff ’ s Department , Refinery Terminal Fire Company , Corpus Christi Police Department , Citgo , Valero , OxyChem , NuStar , Chemours , Dawood Dental , Star Orthodontics , Children ’ s Clinic , City of Aransas Pass , City of Kingsville , and Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau . Over 35 educators representing 16 Independent School Districts including Aransas County , Banquete , Gregory-Portland , Ingleside , Beeville , Tuloso Midway , Corpus Christi , Flour Bluff , Sinton and Calallen applied for positions in the program .
