Imperial provides bees with space to live

Imperial Logistics is making its contribution towards combating the demise of bees . The logistics specialist is providing a home for 10 bee colonies at an outdoor area at its business location in Herten , Germany . A professional organic beekeeper is looking after the bees . The area , which measures about 13,000 sqm and is completed fenced in , is located right next to the multi-user warehouse on the site of the former Ewald coal mine . It can be described as rough pastureland and offers ideal conditions for honey bees because of the variety of herbaceous plants and low shrubs found there . The plot of land is quiet and secluded so that the bees do not create any risks to employees or local residents . “ By setting up this facility , we ’ d like to play our part in maintaining the bee colonies ; their numbers have declined to an alarming degree during the past few years ,” said Lou Greven , who is responsible for sustainability at Imperial , explaining the motivation behind this development . “ As a large land user , it ’ s our duty to use the natural space that is still available as a living area for particularly threatened types of insects ,” the environmental officer adds . The disappearance of natural environments as a result of the increasing use of impervious surfaces and single-crop agriculture are all negative factors that are restricting the living space for bee colonies . Bees are some of the most important working creatures and pollinate fruit and vegetable plants . The fewer fruit and vegetable plants that they pollinate , the less there is to harvest . Experts believe that we would lose one third of what we eat without the work performed by bees . A bee colony , which consists of between about 20,000 and 80,000 creatures , depending on the time of year , can produce 20 – 30kg of honey every year .

CATOFIN award for Clariant

Specialty chemicals maker Clariant has been awarded a contract by Jinneng Science & Technology Company , to design the world ’ s largest single-train propane dehydrogenation unit in collaboration with CB & I . The plant will be located in Qingdao , Shandong Province , China and have the capacity to produce 900,000 tonnes a year of propylene when completed . The project is based on CB & I ’ s CATOFIN propane dehydrogenation technology combined with Clariant ’ s custom-made CATOFIN catalyst and heat generating material . The partners have previously collaborated on numerous projects to design specialised propane dehydrogenation units both in China and around the world . The CATOFIN process is a proven technology for producing olefins , such as propylene or isobutylene , from light paraffin feedstocks with high operational reliability and efficiency . Based on Clariant ’ s catalysts , the technology allows maximum conversion of raw materials at optimum reactor pressure and temperature , resulting in high yields at lower operating costs . Incorporated into the process , Clariant ’ s patented metal-oxide heat generating material increases the catalyst ’ s

selectivity and yield , while conserving energy and reducing emissions . Jinneng Science & Technology is a major industrial producer of fine chemical and coal chemical products . As sustainability is a core component of its business strategy , the company integrates energy efficiency , environmental protection and innovative recycling practices into all production processes . Qingping Qin , founder and CEO of Jinneng , commented : “ We are proud to be building the world ’ s largest propane dehydrogenation unit using the proven and advanced CATOFIN technology . It will enable us to generate tremendous economic benefit and to realize our ambitious development strategy in the years to come .” Stefan Heuser , senior vice president & general manager business unit Catalysts at Clariant , also welcomed the news , stating : “ Clariant is honoured to be part of this historic project for Jinneng Science & Technology . We share the passion for sustainability , which is an integral part of our innovation chain .
