Shanghai ITCO Village a success

This year ’ s ITCO Tank Container Village at Transport Logistic

China , in Shanghai , was predictably busy . A total of 28 ITCO members exhibited at the show , representing all sectors of the industry . The first day concluded with an evening networking reception to mark the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of ITCO . Those who attended the reception survived ‘ tropical ’ temperatures and enjoyed a chance to relax and network with colleagues . To mark the occasion , ITCO president Reg Lee was presented with a special anniversary cake by Meplan , ITCO ’ s long-term Tank Container Village partner .
CIMC rolls out red carpet
To coincide with the event , CIMC staged its fourth Tank Symposium . Attendees were treated to a tour of a CIMC factory where they could see the recently built 220,000th tank container made at the facility , ordered by Exsif Worldwide . CIMC Tank general manager Jee Guoxiang opened proceedings of the symposium before handing over to Lu Weidong , vice mayor of Nantong Municipal Government , for the welcome address . Among presentations from some of the industry ’ s biggest suppliers including Fort Vale and Akzo Nobel , the hot topic under discussion was the move towards bigger tank containers . Driven by the need for increased storage capacity , the trend for larger containers is gathering pace and finding favour with companies such as BASF , which is leading the way with its rail solutions . New regulations and standards which allow increased volumes are now in place and getting support from those within the industry . One company embracing the move towards bigger containers is chemical plant MarkorChem , which uses tank containers to transport its products . Huang Gang , the company ’ s vice general manager provided a robust critique of the industry , focusing on areas for improvement . As well seeking lighter and more efficient insulation , he spoke about the company ’ s desire for improved matching of tanks and flatbeds and internal lighting for enhanced tank container inspections . Guan Xiaodong , general manager of China Railway Tielong Container Logistics ( CRT ), talked about the issues facing the nation ’ s rail industry and its desire to integrate with the EU network . CRT currently owns 30,000 containers - a marked increase of 20,000 since 2012 - but as Guan explained , getting new ones is not a simple process . State-owned companies , which are very much the driving force behind the rail industry , are able to bid just once a year for new containers . With many new and smaller operators in the industry , there is little consistency or experience and standards vary wildly . However Guan believed that it is unlikely that these companies will survive in what is a highly competitive market . ITCO president Reg Lee gave a presentation on the benefits of using tank containers to transport bulk liquid products . During his speech he talked about the risks of using flexitanks and pointed out the lifetime cost savings delivered by using tank containers . He was followed by Pieter Den Hartogh , group managing director
of Den Hartogh , who took a look back over the history of the tank container industry . In a very interesting presentation which focused at the industry ’ s grass roots , attendees discovered that the earliest tank containers were used by Sealand in the 1960s and that the very first tank cost € 50,000 – how times have changed . While Andrew Bishop , Fort Vale ’ s sales director , talked about the company ’ s latest product innovations , Matthew Fletcher , Akzo Nobel ’ s global product manager linings , spoke about lining paints and Deloitte partner Xiang Wei covered enterprise digital transition . Attendees also heard from the CRCC – Qingdao vehicle test centre and Tip Top , a German chemical company that produces rubber linings which could potentially be used in tank containers . The 5th CIMC Tank Symposium will be held in Shanghai 2020 .
