Antwerp, Singapore and Port of Houston form a triumvirate of
giant petrochemical port clusters.
In the Texan port, cargo figures are counted differently as
throughput at the numerous bulk liquid terminals are not
included in the port’s published statistics, although this accounts
for a large pa rt of its overall business.
However, in containers Houston reached a historic high of more
than 2 million loaded TEU handled by mid-December 2015.
Port of Houston Authority chairman Janiece Longoria said the
most recent economic impact study showed that 1.175 million
jobs in the state of Texas are due to port activity. The study
indicated that the increased figure reflects an additional 148,000
jobs were created due to Port of Houston business. “The Port of
Houston’s economic impacts are essential to the prosperity of our
region and our state,” Longoria stated. The Martin Associates
study further revealed that public and private marine terminals at
the Port of Houston had a state-wide economic impact of
US$265 billion in 2014, which is 16 percent of Texas’ total gross
domestic product.
Four new super post-panamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at
Barbours Cut Container Terminal have been commissioned and
are in operation.
About $700 million is being invested by the port authority over
the next decade modernising Barbours Cut to increase efficiency,
facilitate larger vessels and double container handling capacity.
At the newer Bayport terminal, a state-of-the-art truck entry
gate has streamlined truck processing, and a user-friendly mobile
app for truck drivers has increased efficiency. Recently, the port
authority processed a record 4,300 trucks in one day at Bayport,
which opened in 2007 and is being built out according to its
master plan. The terminal continues to show “excellent service
levels” and low truck turn times, the port authority claims.
