Winter Haven, Lakeland and Polk County
governments passed proclamations
stating their commitment to creating and
maintaining healthy communities.

The City of Lakeland, the City of Winter
Haven, and Polk County were recognized
as Healthy Weight Community Champions
in 2014. All cited their work with Building a
Healthier Polk in the application process.
Statewide, only 37 governments were
awarded this recognition.

SUMMARY
The strategy workgroup found the partnership with Polk TPO allowed them to reach all
municipalities in one setting. The Florida Surgeon General’s Healthy Weight Community
Champion recognition program was useful to recognize local work accomplished and as a tool
to assist governments in identifying opportunities to implement best practices.
