Katherine was a child when she emigrated from Honduras with her single mother, who worked nights to make
ends meet. A Breakthrough Miami student who returned twice as a teaching intern, she graduated at the top of
her class, and was one of just 1,000 students nationwide to win the Gates scholarship, a full ride through medical
school, her lifelong dream. Her inspiration to attend Duke came from an intern teacher at Breakthrough Miami.
