We also support parents as they navigate their students’ educational choices. • Our College Bound program prepares high-school students for the challenges of college and career, with advanced academic guidance, comprehensive college-readiness support, assistance with college selection, application and enrollment, and experiential learning. • Our student-to-student model engages outstanding older students as teachers, mentors and role models. Katherine Barahona | Gates Millennium Scholar | Law Enforcement Memorial High School, Senior Class of 2013 * Formerly Summerbridge Miami ALICIA The self-portraits of Breakthrough Miami Scholars used to illustrate this report were created in a project funded by Charitable Arts. | Freshman at Duke University Katherine was a child when she emigrated from Honduras with her single mother, who worked nights to  make ends meet.  A Breakthrough Miami student who returned twice as a teaching intern, she graduated at the top of her class, and was one of just 1,000 students nationwide to win the Gates scholarship, a  full ride  through medical school, her lifelong dream.  Her inspiration to attend Duke came from an intern teacher at Breakthrough Miami.
