Fellow in Works TODD RICHARDSON , FASLA

It is quite an honor to be selected as an ASLA Fellow . It externally recognizes the value of my thinking and work that has occurred day-to-day and week-to-week , shaping my career . It is a privilege to be associated with the depth and breadth of work of other Fellows , which will continue to inspire and influence my career .
Todd Richardson is the Principal and Founder of Richardson & Associates , located in Saco , Maine . Over the span of 27 years , his work has been driven by a passion for the possibilities of design , and is not easily categorized . It includes a highly diverse array of public , private , and non-profit projects varying in scale from the micro to the macro . Engaging audiences as small as a single client or classroom of students to larger communities and institutions , Todd ’ s influence as a designer has had a wide impact . Through both the processes and outcomes of design , Todd has produced exceptional work that continually explores how places connect us to each other , to ourselves , and to the landscape . The essence of his work is about the far-reaching possibilities held in these connections . Throughout his extensive career he has strived to “ make a difference ” in the ways in which people use and care for the land .
Todd ’ s portfolio of work reflects leadership in the profession , numerous regional and national design awards , and outstanding community service . Living and practicing in Maine for his entire career , Todd has been impacted by the State ’ s inherent natural beauty and the uniqueness of the people who reside there . He describes his work as “ of the place ,” as it is often seamlessly integrated with the site .
In addition to practicing landscape architecture , Todd strives to help make design accessible to all , through his teaching and public speaking . As an educator , Todd has taught landscape architecture for over 20 years in various capacities throughout New England . He has taught both the technical and creative aspects of landscape architecture , and believes teaching and practice to be mutually beneficial . He has been recognized for his participatory approach to teaching and was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award from the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University .
Todd received his B . S in Natural Resources / Land Use Planning from the University of Maine at Orono , and his MLA from the University of Massachusetts , Amherst .
“ Todd ’ s wide-ranging built-work , whether urban or naturalistic , is beautifully well-grounded . It has an indigenous quality many designers miss . Materials used in deceptively simple ways look like they have always belonged where they are and give a timeless quality that prevails in his work . After over 50 years of practice , I admire a body of work that has such a high caliber of design .” ~ Stuart O . Dawson , FASLA , RAAR Principal Emeritus , Sasaki Associates
