Houghton ’ s Pond Bath House Milton , Massachusetts
The intent was to design a project that enhances the visitor experience , embraces the context of the site , shows good environmental stewardship , and provide universal access to the entire beach area . The new bathhouse sits prominently overlooking the pond and includes terraces which can accommodate large numbers of people . The terrace areas feature permeable paving to aid in storm water management and include outdoor changing stalls and rinsing stations . The curved stone walls were designed to soften the transition from beach to bath house and provide a variety of circulation options .
Erosion caused by compacted soil and foot traffic on sloped areas and along the main path have been mitigated with erosion control plantings ; a planted barrier of drought resistant grasses , native perennials , shrubs , and trees installed along the road provides controlled access points to the beach and creates a defined edge between the beach and the main circulation path .
Creating universal accessibility from parking / drop off to the beach , given the historic nature of the upper park area , presented a series of challenges . A boardwalk was constructed ; its slopes gently and drops 14 ’ in elevation as it winds through the trees along Marigold Marsh . Viewing platforms with educational panels educate visitors on the history of the area , the eco-system of the marsh , and the importance of habitat stewardship . Sensitive alignment of the boardwalk through the trees and the removal of invasive and volunteer plants along Marigold Marsh were major undertakings in this project . This is the first time in its history that the entire Houghton ’ s Pond recreation and beach area has been universally accessible .
