As an emerging professional working at the National Park Service, I have the opportunity to work on projects that involve research, writing, and mapping, and others that deal specifically with some of the issues I focused on while in grad school. One major difference from school is that the design work I do is on a more site-specific and detailed level. One example is Derby Wharf at Salem Maritime National Historic Site, which is seeing a localized rise in sea level on the Salem Harbor. The wharf is an earthen structure reinforced by thick stone bulkheads on all sides. It was rehabilitated in the late 1930s, but has been subjected to the damaging forces of high tides, wave a
