About the only things that have changed
over the centuries about canteens are the
materials used to make them. The canteen
that Olmsted included in his toolbox was
likely of tin-plated steel with a screw cap.

Replaced by bottled water in the late 20th
century, canteen usage took a dive. But
with concerns about BPA seepage and the
Great Pacific Garbage Patch causing health
and environmental concerns, the canteen
is experiencing a renaissance.
