that had three summits . Two of the three were leveled to make land , with only Beacon Hill remaining today . Abstract representation is also an issue for landscape architects : Will viewers be able to interpret the meaning of the three voids , and do they need to ?
ton cranes and one 300-ton crane did the work of winching the supporting cables into place . A time-lapse photo sequence gives the impression of an animal breaking out of its shell and coming to life .
From numerous color studies , five twines were selected for the entire project . The green , pink , and orange twines are woven from multiple hues of nylon fibers . The array of colors are organized into the many separately patterned panels that together form the actual layout shown in plan . The black and white stripes are designed to evoke memories of the lanes of the former highway , and the green possibly references the former elevated structure or the Greenway itself . The fibers with hues ranging from neon shades of pink to orange are visually dominant , seen first from a distance , and most readily seen both in daylight and when the sculpture is lighted at night .
The whole woven piece was designed to fit into a crate that itself fits into the bed of a small truck for transport . When the crate was opened and the sculpture unfolded , it was hydraulically lifted to connect it to the cables of the hard net that attached it to buildings . Five 90-

Echelman wanted the color patterns of the panels to be offset so that the jarring quality would energize the perception of the piece . The most animating qualities of the work , however , are ephemeral and must be seen in person : movement and color . The shimmering drift of the soft net as the wind moves through it is mesmerizing . The colors of the soft net seem to change as readily as the sky changes or as they are reflected in surrounding facades . At night , the sculpture is lit from below with colored lights . These lights change the apparent colors of the neon fibers while causing the black areas to become invisible and the white areas to reflect the colors of the lights . The sculpture can be viewed at any time of day but it will not likely ever look the same .
