running header LOOKING THROUGH THE LENS OF STELLA EVANS, PH.D. If you gaze deeply into the eyes of a child, a romantic partner, or even a beloved pet, you see something beyond the physical surface. Love, sadness, joy, and other “invis- ible” qualities somehow radiate through the eyes. Look long enough, and you may feel as if you’ve glimpsed into this being’s very soul. As Emanuel Swedenborg wrote, “It is our interior life … that, through the organs of our body, senses things that are in the world, and perceives them naturally. The whole body, with all its senses, is merely an instrument of its soul, or of its spirit.” (AE 152) With this in mind, it may come as little surprise that at a cellular level, our eyes function through an astoundingly complex interaction of electrical signals, responses, and processes. Within this fascinating world of the human eye, professor Stella Evans, Ph.D., has spent her entire ca- reer and made exciting new contributions. 24 | S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 1 7
