running header BEYOND CLASSROOM WALLS, INTO RESIDENCE HALLS A college residence hall is basically just a place to sleep, right? To this question, Bryn Athyn College’s residence life director, Jenny Lindsay Lucas (AA ’05), would laugh and shake her head. She says, “What you learn in classrooms is really important, but there’s also so much that you can learn out of the classroom, living in this campus community. You learn more about who you are as a person, how you interact with others, how you navigate challenges, and what brings you joy. Living on campus gives you opportunities for personal growth and helps you mature into the person you want to be. I’ve seen it happen for so many students, and it’s awesome.” Because of this depth of potential, the residence life team has dedicated themselves to fostering what they call, “a living and learning community.” For the living side, students have opportunities to let loose and have fun with things like danc- es, outings, barbecues, and midnight snack offerings. For the learning side, students can participate in a wide variety of life-skills offerings, such as cooking on a budget, communicating in tough situations, and learning to relax their minds through yoga and mindfulness techniques. Last fall, for example, students in one of the residence halls came up with an activity to reinforce the value of appreciating one’s Students play basketball outside the new residence halls.
