Before long, Katya and Mark
dreamed of extending the oppor-
tunity to younger people. So in
2011, Katya and Mark reached out
to their alma maters, including
Bryn Athyn College, to see if any
students were interested in an in-
ternship.
David Gladish, who attended
the College in 2008, saw Katya’s
invitation in the Bryn Athyn
Post. He said “I was looking for
a way to get into sailing, and the
trip they advertised seemed like
just the ticket. The fact that we
would be sailing with a family and
two young kids made it feel more
wholesome and less intimidating.”
David applied, was accepted,
and soon joined the Gordon fam-
ily and a few other young adults
on a 10-day wilderness adventure
to Isle Royale. David said, “We
circumnavigated the island, stop-
ping at different spots for hiking,
exploring, and swimming. We
learned about navigation, sailing,
cooking, flora, and fauna, and
shared many games, life lessons,
and lots of good conversation.”
He added, “My most memorable
moments were the open-water
sailing, sleeping on the deck, see-
ing moose swimming in Lake Su-
perior, and spending lots of time
with the Gordons.”
The following year, Joy
(Brown) Cole (BA ’14) decided
to take the opportunity. Joy had
done some volunteering the previ-
ous summer on Sloop Clearwater,
an environmental education ship
on the Hudson, and wanted to
gain more sailing experience.
Joy loved her experience as
