A Snapshot of Regional Progress:
Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)
Among countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS) trends are largely positive. The region is on track to meet the
poverty target. Most countries will meet the hunger target. Georgia and Uzbekistan are exceptions. Most CIS countries will achieve
the target set for primary school enrolment and parity in primary
school enrollment for boys and girls. An area of concern for CIS
countries is the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases. The HIV/
AIDS epidemic is spreading quickly, particularly in the Russian
Federation. Tuberculosis is also on the rise. The prevalence of HIV/
AIDS is high in the Baltics and increasing in neighboring countries
to the East, such as Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova, where public
health conditions are rapidly deteriorating. Another area of concern is access to water and sanitation services.
