Story behind Kickstarter Stars By Irena Djourelova As Game and Media students, we all have our eyes on the Kickstarter magic. Butterflies in the stomach because of a crush? No, not really. That warm fluttery feeling comes when we get to see our projects, ideas, and well… Dreams come to life. So, why not give a little push to the endorphin rush by adding some crowdfunding madness? If you can make a complete stranger believe that your idea is the next big thing, then www.kickstarter.com is the place to be. By simply posting a short description of your project and/ or a video explaining the general idea (Internet Guide 101: the weirdest, the better), you get the chance to persuade completely unknown people to follow, support, and most importantly fund your project. In return, your loving backers can get whatever you promise them – an early access to the finalized product, a pat on the back, a massive potato salad party, just name it. So, if you’re on your way to becoming the next media guru, gather up some guts, jump right into the crowdfunding chaos, and become part of the buzz. To demolish any trace of hesitation we’ve prepared for you 3 examples of the most memorable Kickstarter successes. Read carefully and get some inspiration. 44 Interior_Brewed_Oktober2014.indd 44 Gaming: Star Citizen The game Star Citizen will be a hybrid between a single player and a multiplayer combat and trade simulator, which allows the player to explore the constantly evolving virtual universe in multiple ways. In other words, the creators aim to do something that has never been seen before. Everything mentioned above will be accompanied by outstanding graphics and realistic physics. The game will be supported not only on Windows and Linux, but also on Oculus Rift. The developer of the game, Chris Roberts, known for creating the popular in the 90’s Wing Commander series, had set the humble Kickstarter goal of collecting $500 000 to develop the prototype of Star Citizen further. Instead, he managed to obtain more than 2 million dollars only from his Kickstarter backers. He added up to that another 50 million raised through the game’s website. This puts Star Citizen next to the most funded projects in the industry, ever. The fan raised budget surpasses those of games such as Grand Theft Auto 5. This has lead to tremendously raising the expectations of the game. Kickstarter 22-10-14 12:11
