The “Dutch Golden Age” caused development in many
ways. Women strengthened their position in European society and thereby deserved help with child birth. Besides
the universities in medicine that were founded they also
became very inventive.
16th Century
People doubtlessly believed in what was called ‘the power of powders’, said to be made of horn from the mythical unicorn and of bezoar stone (which, according to J.K.
Rowling, is used in the world of magic as well).
17th Ccntury
Someone concluded that the best way to treat a wound
was not to put boiling oil on it but to gently salve the
wound with a cold lotion brewed out of rose-oil and turpentine (currently used for thinning paint).
