1734 VIBRATOR The first vibrator was a relief for doctors who were suffering from overworked wrists and hands. Vulvar stimulation, as it was called in this century, had nothing to do with sex but was a treatment for a wide variety of illnesses. A logical consequence was the invention of the first steam-powered vibrator: the “manipulator”. 1869 COAT HANGER Coat hangers were patented in the year 1869 already, however the coat hanger as we know it was executed in 1903 by an employee of the Timberlake Wire Company. His colleagues couldn’t stop whining about the few coat hooks provided by the company, so Albert took a wire and created: the coat hanger. 1873 EARMUFFS One day in Farmington Maine, the Earmuff capital of the world, the 15 year old Chester Greenwood was playing truant while testing his new ice skates. The bitter cold went straight through his scarf and Chester made two ear-shaped loops out of wire and fur. Four years later Chester was the fortunate owner of Greenwood’s Ear Protector Factory. 16 18
