Winter in different Countries Winter is the perfect time of the year for celebrating. Snow, festivals, and delicious food. Across the world people celebrate this heart-warming season in a number of enticing ways. Always wanted to find out what it’s like to experience winter in different countries? Then look no further! Words by Jasmine Smith, Looks by Marty van de Ven THE ALPS & LES TROIS VALLEES - FRANCE France. Home of the greatest ski resorts in the world. For all of you sports fanatics out there, France is definitely the place to be for a spot of skiing or snowboarding. If you’re still a virgin to the slopes and are willing to try out something new this winter, then dare yourself to have a dash at this exciting winter sport! Beginners, don’t panic. France offers a variety of ‘baby’ slopes to get you to grips. Head to Courchevel Moriond, situated in the ski area of Les Trois Vallées. This beautiful ski resort benefits from 150km of piste, a variety of shops, restaurants and clubs. You can also try out tobogganing, ice-driving, and even paragliding over the glistening snowy slopes! For those intermediates who have already crafted skill on the slopes, a great destination in France for you to put these skills into practice (if you haven’t yet been) is Serre Chevalier, one of Europe’s largest ski areas located in the southern Alps. There is a whopping 250km of piste to enjoy, accompanied with a variety of red and blue runs to descend down, all served by 62 lifts across the resort. Of course, the ski resort also offers nursery slopes for all you beginners to get into the swing of the sport, so go crazy! CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - USA Calling all football fans. You cannot say you have had the best time during winter until you have visited a Chicago Bears game huddled under a blanket as snow whips your face in freezing temperatures. This sounds a lot like torture to those not phased by football, but many Chicagoans would claim to feel privileged to attend a Bears game. The cosy warmth of the wooden huts and mugs of hot chocolate are always there to thaw the hands of dedicated fans rooting for their team, and possibly even yourself if this takes your fancy! Bears tickets are in hot demand, so get yourself over to Chicago if you’re longing for that cosy, winter feeling whilst you cheer frantically watching your favourite sport. 13
