The Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton near Cambridge houses some of the world ’ s foremost institutes and organisations in genomics and computational biology . The Campus is at the cutting-edge of genomic research and many scientific discoveries that have dramatically changed our understanding of human health and disease continue to be made here .

The campus has its origins in the original Human Genome Project . The Sanger Centre ( as it was known in 1993 ) was built on the site as a major part of the global effort to sequence the first human genome . The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is now a world-leader in genomics research , with a mission to use genome sequences to increase understanding of human and pathogen biology to improve human health worldwide .
Funded by the Wellcome Trust , the Sanger Institute has five programmes of research which investigate Cancer , Cellular Genetics , Human Genetics , Infection Genomics and Malaria .
