Graeme Reid is Professor of Science and Research Policy at University College London , and was a specialist adviser to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee inquiry into EU membership and UK science . The committee ’ s latest report ‘ A time for boldness : EU membership and UK science after the referendum ’ was published in December 2016 .

In your opinion , what are the opportunities presented by Brexit ? The overwhelming majority of people in science and research favoured remaining in the EU . But that stage of the debate has now passed and we must move on . I hope UK researchers will now look for the opportunities Brexit will bring . Britain ’ s EU exit , creates new types of political will , so might be an unexpected catalyst , giving impetus to good ideas that might otherwise have been ignored .
