Most costs associated with a building are related to the people who occupy it. Statistics indicate that the number may be as much as 80% of a building’s cost, with the remaining 20% spent on infrastructure and IT. The WELL Building Standard™ is an evidence-based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring the performance of building features that impact occupant health and wellbeing. WELL® addresses human health and wellness through seven concepts: air, R E A D O N L I N E AT: u K s pa . o r g . u K / b r e a K t h r o u g h water, light, fi tness, mind, comfort, and nourishment. Each of these features of WELL® has a signifi cant role in the various systems of the human anatomy. Architecture fi rm HOK is pioneering the development of the WELL® Lab concept by researching the application of these seven WELL concepts in the design of the research laboratory environment. We are embracing this opportunity and unique responsibility to advance awareness of health and wellness design, profi ciency, and innovation in the scientifi c workplace. By developing solutions that focus on health and wellbeing, we hope to promote occupant wellness and scientifi c productivity.
