Brampton Art Council | ARTS TALK VOL 28 ISSUE 2 | Page 3

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR The past few weeks have been a roller coaster ride for the Brampton Arts Council. It is sadly true that the charitable organization will be winding down its business as of June 30, 2015. Many of you have been dropping by to seek advice on issues and offer support. Thank you. The lack of City Council prior discussions and City Council orientations for new Councillors, as well as, the swift axe to our core-funding were not understandable on several fronts. Making the second half of 2015 the “transitional” year does not give any group the time to adjust or plan properly. The BAC Board has looked at this situation from all avenues and the closure is agreed to be the most workable solution. Serving more artists each year as Brampton grows was at times financially daunting but definitely exciting to see the art community expand. There is an important Special Meeting scheduled for June 23, 2015 at the Brampton Golf Club at 7:30 p.m. for all members to ratify the decisions of the Board. We are attempting to acquire answers for you that evening concerning our benefits that relate to the City. Also, since we won’t be around for the second half of 2015, we are returning ½ of your membership fees for this year. These will be available for pick up at this meeting, with the remainder being sent out. While we are very busy with the closure as well as the daily business, memories keep coming forward. We have had many “firsts” and “best practices” throughout the years. These were tailored to aid in our dedication to education/development, networking opportunities, communica tions, promotion and advocacy. You have told us how each of those endeavours have assisted you in the development as artists and entrepreneurs. Recently, we have heard repeatedly how HACE, particularly the Business of the Arts Workshops, had become so important in you. The Brampton Arts Council’s recognition of excellence in the arts vibrated across the community ... BAC Arts Person of the Year, Leon Bacardi Artistic Award, Harry Dale Literary Award, BRAVO Awards and in particular the Artistic Achievement Awards to schools. Of course, we are still proud of our first HACE initiative, BeauxArts Brampton, and the wonderful achievements of those artists! Our wish was to stop the flood of our artists leaving the city by providing affordable venues for them to work. Statistics are constantly proving that art is a very viable economic engine and we should be cultivating this sector...many cities have. Hope to see you on June 23, 2015. Board and staff wish you all much success in the future. We know you will continue to make us proud!
