NEW DEAL FOR GENERAL PRACTICE: Hear Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt speak at Best Practice A ‘NEW DAWN’ OR A ‘SET OF OLD REPACKAGED IDEAS’? Will GPs get a new deal or a raw deal from the package of measures announced by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt for general practice? This is one of the burning issues high on the agenda of this year’s Best Practice event as the primary care community digests the Mr Hunt’s pledge to put the “inspiration and magic” back into GPs’ working lives. Mr Hunt’s “new deal” includes: a £10m pledge for a turnaround programme to prevent practices closing; proposals to increase the primary care workforce by 10,000 staff - practice nurses, district nurses, physician associates, pharmacists and 5,000 GPs; golden hellos to attract GPs to areas of greatest need and a national marketing campaign to promote general practice. There is also a £1 billion Primary Care Infrastructure Fund announced last year and a review of the way performance metrics are collated and published. In return for the additional investment in general practice the Health Secretary has asked GPs to work with him to improve access to routine appointments, with a seven day service commitment. He has asked that social prescribing becomes a normal part of GPs’ work, that GPs play an even bigger role in public health and that general practice takes “real clinical responsibility” so that patients know “where the buck stops for their NHS care”. 1000 TRAINING BURSARIES ALREADY CLAIMED! www.bestpracticeshow.co.uk Just 1500 training bursaries now left!
