My reason for that was, I was too scared to encounter a naysayer. You know, we were struggling. We needed something that worked. Our mortgage was due, I was a brand new parent, a struggling one at the time. We’d lost our business. I was a more fragile Miko and I couldn’t handle any of the naysayers.

So what I did was just put my head down and just stayed busy at work. I stayed focused on becoming the best expert on curls, kinks and waves. Stayed focused on creating products that really work so that by the time large groups of people knew about our service, our products, I would have the posture and position of confidence. I focused on that. We spent more time building the business and less time putting ourselves out there for scrutiny.

BOSSY!: You mentioned losing your first business. I think that is every entrepreneur’s nightmare. How were you able to push past that and start again? For a lot of people that kind of setback sends them running back to their 9-5. What made you able to say, nope I’m just going to try something new?

Miko: For me personally, two things happened. Once failure set in, I realized I needed to grow up. My sister Titi took her job seriously as the older sister and I relied on her for everything. There were certain areas where she might have made all the decisions, but I was aware of them and agreed with them.
