09 Bosch Stemele assists with informal housing sanitation north of Umgeni River Bosch Stemele has installed 190 modified ablution blocks to areas such as KwaMashu, Inanda and Amaoti as part of eThekwini Waste and Sanitation’s (EWS) mandate to provide ablution blocks to over 300 informal settlements across the city. These facilities will supply 800 000 people with access to running water and toilet facilities. The new infrastructure wlll serve future formal housing developments replacing the informal settlements. The overall sanitation project commenced in January 2010 with a budget of R600million for 2013/2014, with further budgets for the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 periods respectively. Bosch Stemele was tasked to carry out the water and sewerage system design for the informal areas north of the Umgeni. Each ablution facility is erected for every 50 to 75 dwellings within a settlement and the services were designed at an average of 20 sites a month. Community development is at the heart of eThekwini’s strategy on-site and all labour and other project requirements are sourced from within the communities. Contractors, Icon Construction, has employed approximately 700 people and is mentoring four eThekwini Development contractors while Bosch Stemele is also mentoring an eThekwini Development consultant. Other positive spinoffs include job creation and inservice training for technical students. [email protected] Flushing Toilets Washing Facilities Completed ablutions
