Bosch Stemele begins R106m Phoenix Wastewater
Treatment Works upgrade
eThekwini Water & Sanitation (EWS) recently appointed
Bosch Stemele for the design and contract monitoring
of the civil and M&E extension to the Phoenix Wastewater
Treatment Works. This was necessitated by the eThekwini
strategic planning study and the commencement of the
Cornubia Development, which will require the wastewater
treatment works to function at its ultimate design capacity.
extension except for the existing second-class water pump
station which will be decommissioned and demolished.
The original Works was designed by the Durban City Engineer’s
Department for an ultimate capacity of 50Ml/d. The first stage
was constructed in 1987 with a capacity of 12,5Ml/d. The
second stage was constructed in 1997 to bring the capacity to
25Ml/d. This current extension will take the capacity to 50Ml/
day. Another reason for the augmentation is the possibility
that all flow to the Umhlanga WWTW may be diverted to the
Phoenix WWTW.

The R106million civil contract will commence in October 2013
and is due to be completed within two years. The mechanical
and electrical contract is scheduled to commence in the New
Year.
Bosch Stemele acknowledges the contribution of the Design
Branch of EWS for design guidance and vetting of design,
specifications and documentation.
The design includes for primary and secondary treatment
as well as a new sludge thickening and digestion plant. The
extension also includes a new second-class water filtration
system together with a new chlorine dosing installation.
All existing units and facilities will be incorporated into the
