Umdoni flood damage assessment n 17th and 18 June 2008, the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal experienced unusually high rainfall and flash floods. Weather stations reported new rainfall records within a 24 hour period, ranging from 189,2mm in Margate and Pennington to 382mm in Paddock. The damage along the coast was devastating and many roads and houses were washed away. People were left stranded and destitute and they were housed in community halls and centres during the crisis. O After the floods, SBA were requested by the Ugu District Municipality to do an assessment of the flood damage within the areas of Freeland Park, Park Rynie, Scottburgh, Pennington, Sezela, Ifafa, Elysium, Bazley and Mtwalume, all within the Umdoni Municipality. An assessment report was produced and repairs to damages for the above areas were estimated at R7,35 million. BA is providing engineering services in all disciplines of this project, which has been designed to treat and discharge effluent of a higher quality than the normal DWAF general standard. S “Phase 1 of the project will handle 6,0 M/d of sewage in a modular layout. However, certain structures have been designed to handle the ultimate flow of 18 M/d,” says Morrell Rosseau, director of SBA. “Construction of the treatment works comes as a great relief for the developers in the Ballito North area, where this works was a pre-requisite for further development to take place”. The civil contract is valued at R23,4 million, with estimated costs for the mechanical and electrical components expected to amount to a further R5,4 million. The client, Siza Water Company, has budgeted R300 000 for landscaping which will include planting indigenous trees, shrubs and wild grasses on the site. Final effluent will be discharged through a reed bed lagoon. 8 Contact: Morrell Rosseau – [email protected] Sheffield wastewater treatment works under construction.
